Filipino powerlifters win 78 medals, set 10 new records in SEA Cup

The Philippine powerlifting team has brought home a total of 78 gold, silver, and bronze medals while establishing new lifting records in the inaugural Southeast Asian (SEA) Cup held in Malaysia.

The Philippine men’s and women’s teams together earned 44 golds, 17 silvers, and 17 bronze medals in competition against the top powerlifters from participating countries in Southeast Asia in this year’s powerlifting tournament held in Johor Bahru.

The men’s team won 49 medals in the Men’s Open, Junior, and Master I categories while also setting 3 new Asian Junior records in the meet.

World Games qualifier Joyce Gail Reboton led the women’s powerlifting team which bagged 29 medals. The Pinay lifters also set 7 new Asian Records in the Women’s Open and Junior Categories.

This year’s SEA Cup was organized by the International Powerlifting Federation, Asian Powerlifting Federation, and the Malaysian Association for Powerlifting from September 15 to 18, 2022.

The Philippine national powerlifting team earlier won 4 golds, 2 silvers, and 5 bronze medals in the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, while Filipino teen women lifters led by Vanessa Sarno tallied 15 gold medals at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
