Filipino activist Alfredo “Fred” Lubang has won the Sean MacBride Peace Prize for his outstanding work towards peacebuilding in the Philippines.
Lubang of Non-Violence International Southeast Asia (NISEA) was named among this year’s winners of the special prize awarded by the International Peace Bureau (IPB) to an individual or organization that has done outstanding work for peace, disarmament, and human rights.
The nonviolence activist was recognized for his efforts to build peace through humanitarian disarmament, peace education, and humanitarian engagement.
“I am honored and humbled. As one of the recipients of the 2022 Sean MacBride Peace Award, I recognize and share the aspirations of many peacebuilders who continue to persevere through difficult times,” Fred Lubang shared on his Twitter account on September 9, 2022.

Lubang holds a Master’s degree in Applied Conflict Transformation Studies and has served on various boards of global disarmament campaigns. He is the Regional Representative of NISEA and National Coordinator of the Philippine Campaign to Ban Landmines (PCBL).
“Without Fred Lubang’s unflagging work and commitment – especially in the face of ongoing wars – the Philippines would not be the only country that has ratified nearly all humanitarian disarmament treaties today,” the IPB website stated about Lubang’s work.
Lubang joins this year’s awardees which include fellow activists Eset Maruket Gagieva and Yurii Sheliazhenko from Russia and Ukraine and Japanese Hiroshi Takakusaki.
Every year the International Peace Bureau awards the special prize named after Séan MacBride, the distinguished Irish statesman who served as Chairman and President of the IPB. He was a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974.
Filipinos who have been recognized for leading human rights efforts and advocacies include press freedom champion and first Filipino Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Maria Ressa and lawyer Angelo Karlo Guillen who won the Baldwin Medal of Liberty for his continuing efforts to defend human rights despite facing threats and risks to his own life.
