An all-new Filipino animated series about Maria Makiling folklore and mythology is now streaming on Netflix for the world to enjoy.

Epik Studios’ ‘Mga Kwentong Epik: Alamat ni Maria Makiling,’ released last Friday at midnight, September 16, 2022, is already on Netflix’s Top Search and Popular Now lists.

The six-episode Filipino comic series follows Ria, a young woman fascinated by the story of Maria Makiling whom she later discovers is actually herself.

Ria, voiced by actress Ryza Cenon, takes on adventures in her hometown in San Pablo, Laguna.

The mythological series also features the superhero Pedro Penduko and the infamous Nuno. It is engagingly narrated by the Philippines’ favorite storyteller, Bodjie “Kuya Bodie” Pascua of Batibot.

Each episode explores distinct parts of the Filipino culture and runs approximately from 19 – 24 minutes.

Originally debuted on the TV5 network, Mga Kwentong Epik reimagines Philippine mythology and folklore from a comedic and superhero-like point of view.

Filipino animated features have been continuously making waves in celebrating our local artistry and culture, such as the hit Netflix anime ‘Trese’ with its all-Filipino voice cast and ‘Heneral Tuna’ teaching Pinoy values to children.
