Philippine Science High School (PSHS) and Saint Jude Catholic School (SJCS) students bagged three medals and a merit citation in the 33rd International Biology Olympiad held as an in-person event this year in Yerevan, Armenia.

All four members of the Philippine national team, comprised of students from Philippine Science High School (PSHS) – Main Campus in Quezon City, PSHS – Western Visayas Campus, PSHS – CALABARZON Region Campus, and Saint Jude Catholic School (SJCS) in Manila, finished strong and brought home awards in the world’s premier biology competition for high school students.

The Philippine representatives competed against participants from 64 countries in this year’s competition held on-site after two remote IBO Challenges in 2020 and 2021.

Winning the country’s bronze medals are Raven Foronda from PSHS – Main Campus, Yosef Segotier from PSHS – Western Visayas Campus, and Chiara Tan-Gatue from Saint Jude Catholic School, who also took home a bronze in last year’s IBO challenge, while Liam Alleda from PSHS – CALABARZON Region Campus received a merit citation.

This was the biggest haul of medals for Team Philippines since it started joining the science competition in 2018, according to Ronald Cruz, the country coordinator for the IBO.

The students emerged as the country’s four delegates to the world high school biology student competition after winning the annual Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO).

This year’s International Biology Olympiad (IBO) competition conducted on-site at the Yerevan State University in Yerevan, Armenia from July 10 to 18, 2022, brought together gifted students from around the world. The annual tilt aims to challenge and stimulate students to expand their talents and promote their future careers as scientists.

Team Philippines continues its winning streak in recently concluded science Olympiads such as the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) and the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
