Boracay Island in the Philippines has been hailed a “paradise reborn” in Time Magazine’s list of the World’s Greatest Places following its restoration and successful reopening to tourists amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The paradise island of Boracay in Malay town, Aklan, earned the distinction after having had ample time to recover since a six-month closure for rehabilitation back in 2018 and over two years of pandemic restrictions.

The revamped island destination, which saw the return of thriving marine life as well as a variety of tourist attractions, has now reopened to travelers amid a more relaxed alert level status in the area.

“As of February 2022, international visitors can finally revel in this revamped, recuperated, natural playground after what was effectively a three-year convalescence,” wrote Time magazine’s East Asia correspondent Charlie Campbell.

“Locals report the return of flora and fauna, like sea turtles, and hospitality has come back just as spectacularly,” added Campbell.

The World’s Best Island of Boracay is included in the July 25/August 1 issue of TIME magazine’s selection of 50 extraordinary destinations to explore alongside the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Seoul in Korea, and Doha in Qatar, among others.

According to Time magazine, the list is composed of both far-flung and familiar destinations around the world, many of which are paving the way to economic recovery as more countries ease travel restrictions to boost the hospitality industry.

The list was compiled by Time’s editors through nominations from its international network of correspondents and contributors, “with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences,” the magazine said on July 12, 2022.

Last year, the Philippines’ surfing capital Siargao Island made it to Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2021.

Boracay secured back-to-back No. 2 world ranks for the Philippines in this year’s 50 Most Instagrammable Places in the World ranking and won a United Nations prize for practicing sustainable tourism in the new normal.
