The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) has used a student thesis paper to develop an Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection machine to sterilize documents and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus

The machine was the product of a thesis paper by mechanical engineering students of the university who discovered that ultraviolet rays could disinfect items and surfaces in as little as eight seconds.

The UV Disinfection Conveyor Machine was initiated by the university’s Office of the Vice President for Research, Planning, and Development (OVPREPD) in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO).

The IPMO, with the help of its engineers and technical experts, expanded on the engineering students’ concept and designed user-friendly disinfection machines to benefit the university and aid in the fight to contain the virus.

According to Engineer Ginno Andres, project head and IPMO director, the new machines will be distributed to offices that consume and use significant amounts of paper.

“We plan to distribute the machines to crowded areas [in the university]…Kasi madami pa ding opisina na gumagamit ng maraming papel at hindi pa naman tayo paperless. The main beneficiary of project is the PUP community,” said Engr. Andres in the university’s news release published on June 20, 2022.

The university said that seven units have been produced so far and that a total of PHP 100,000 served as the seed fund to design the machines. The IPMO also plans to commercialize and mass-produce the machines in the future.

PUP earlier successfully developed ethyl alcohol with Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) whose antiviral properties have been tested.

Philippine universities that developed solutions and innovations for Filipino frontliners amid the novel coronavirus pandemic include the University of the Philippines which developed the first Philippine-made COVID-19 Test Kit, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) – Main Campus which developed ethyl alcohol from agricultural wastes while the Marinduque State College (MSC) produced 95% alcohol from coconut and mangrove sap.
