The first-ever Philippines offshore wind roadmap showing the nation’s potential renewable energy source was launched ahead of Earth Day 2022.
The country’s Department of Energy (DOE) and the World Bank Group, with funding from the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), presented the offshore wind energy source map of the Philippines during the public streaming on April 20.
The World Bank and DOE report released on the same day indicates that the Philippines can install 21 gigawatts of offshore wind power by the year 2040.
The estimated electricity supply resulting from the harnessed wind power is expected to cut the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Fossil fuel energy accounted for about 79% of the Philippines’ power generation mix as of 2020, according to the government report. Coal power accounted for nearly 60% of the mix.
Renewable energy had a share of 21 percent. Solar, wind, and biomass, accounted for just 4% of the renewable energy mix.
The government is targeting the increase of renewable energy share in the power mix to 35% by 2030 and to 50% by 2040.
The presentation laid out the potential and concrete next steps for developing a robust offshore wind industry in the Philippines.
The roadmap requires stakeholders from across the public and private sectors to discuss technical, economic, environmental, social, employment, and financing aspects of establishing the country’s offshore wind market.
The Liter of Light has issued an Earth Day Challenge to build Light It Forward solar lamps in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Bio-Industries carrageenan plant has declared it is powered by 100% renewable energy.
