The Philippines had the second-highest number of female inventors among applicants for international patents in 2021, according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Consumer company Statista’s analysis of data shows that the share of female inventors among applicants for international patents in the previous year was the highest in Cuba, followed by the Philippines.
Data journalist Katharina Buchholz reported that the share of female applicants stood only at 17 percent globally in 2021. Cuba topped the list, with more than half, or 53 percent of its registered patent applicants being women.
The Philippines came in second with 38 percent of female applicants. Portugal was the highest-ranking European country at the top 3.
China ranked above average at 24 percent. Meanwhile, European countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden, stayed behind the global average. The United States and France ranked about average on the Statista ranking for Countries with the Most Female Inventors.
Filipina women working in the space sector were put in the spotlight during the Philippines’ celebration of World Space Week last year.
Filipino women social entrepreneurs were also offered technology support for their business by the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).
