The Philippines’ Educating and Empowering the Community through Mobile Knowledge Access and Resource for Training (KART) project has won the inaugural Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring global campaign launched by Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade.

The mobile classroom initiative of the non-profit organization SEED4COM emerged among the three winning proposals in this year’s competition, which drew over 700 submissions from 61 countries.

The winning team behind the Mobile Kart project was lauded for putting together a mobile classroom that champions education and sustainable energy in rural areas.

The mobile classroom is powered by solar panels and is even equipped with laptops and the internet to reach learners from far-flung communities in the country.

Cynthia Kiang, the Director-General of Taiwan’s BOFT, virtually presented certificates to the winners during an awards ceremony on January 26, 2022.

Jonathan Cartilla of the Mobile Kart project thanked the organizers of the event for the opportunity to empower underprivileged learners and the youth in rural areas through the initiative.

As one of the top three winners of the campaign, the country’s Mobile Kart project bagged a cash prize of $10,000 and a grant budget of $150,000.

The two other winners were “Solar Solutions for Indigenous Māori Communities” (New Zealand) and “One-day Medical Tour and Same-day Denture Delivery-Mobile Digital Denture Clinic & Oral Health Service Project” (Taiwan).

Aside from the Mobile Kart initiative, two other entries from the Philippines Kusinata and Project En-ABLE also made it to the finals of the event.

The Taiwan Excellence: Sharing is Caring campaign was held for the first time to call for creative solutions around the globe to solve problems relating to social concerns and environmental protection.

Innovative learning solutions for Filipino learners launched amid the pandemic include the Book Nook, the first-ever all-Pinoy reading and storytelling space, and the mobile library in Ilocos Norte that provides the free use of distance learning tools and books.
