Guba National High School (GNHS) in Negros Oriental has bagged the silver award for its eco-friendly projects during the International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom Awards), a prestigious awards program recognized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The Philippine educational institution emerged as the country’s only finalist and eventual winner of the Environmental Sustainability Project Awards category of the virtual finals.
GNHS bested 160 entries submitted by other countries to the contest for their Eco-friendly School Project initiative.
The public school’s environmentally sustainable initiative and other practices were showcased in its official video entry to the competition “Baktas sa Paglaom (Walk of Hope)”.
The video shows the struggles of a typical Filipino high school student who has to cross rivers as well as rocky hills every day just to be able to attend school.
The school’s commitment to eco-friendly practices was portrayed in the short film which was set against the backdrop of modular or distance learning adopted by students across the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among the school’s projects is an initiative to beautify landscapes and public spaces in the area with recycled materials. Students are also armed with the knowledge and consciousness to save the environment.
The winners of the awards were judged based on key areas such as enhancement of public spaces, environmental protection, green economy, community empowerment, sustainable planning policies, healthy lifestyles and art, culture, and heritage management.
The first-ever virtual finals of The LivCom Awards that gather cities from all around the world to discuss and share their best practices to become a more sustainable community were held from December 8 to 9, 2021.
De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) in Cavite earlier earned its spot as the top 3 Sustainability Institution of the Year in the 2021 International Green Gown Awards while the Bohol Wisdom School (BWS) is currently shortlisted for the 2022 Zayed Sustainability Prize.
