The winning entry of the video contest held during the international conference was created to bring awareness to the conservation of the famous lake in Batangas after the Taal Volcano in Batangas province erupted in 2020.
The 2-minute video also aims to aid the resilient but vulnerable fisherfolk communities in the province whose livelihoods were affected by the volcanic eruption.
The short film was produced by the UST-led Taal PEER program funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) which is headed by the university’s Assistant Professor Jonathan Carlo Briones and College of Science Dean Rey Donne Papa in collaboration with JCI Antipolo and the Kilusan ng mga Maliit na Mangingisda sa Lawa ng Taal (KMMLT).
The video contest was promoted to show the impressions and reflections on life and activities related to natural lakes. Entries were evaluated based on factors such as creativity, originality, and entertainment value during the International Symposium on Conservation and Management of Tropical Lakes held from November 25 to 26, 2021, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Taal Lake in Batangas is the home of the world’s only freshwater sardine locally known as “tawilis” (Sardinella tawilis) which is being saved by the University of the Philippines scientists from possible extinction.
The Philippines’ lakes including Taal will benefit from scientific solutions developed through Department of Science and Technology (DOST) studies towards better water quality for aquaculture and fisheries industries.
