There is a new baby Philippine eagle hatched for the first time in 5 years at the conservation center in Davao City.

Chick No. 29 is the first eaglet since 2016 to be hatched at the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) at Barangay Malagos, Baguio District in Davao del Sur.

Chick Sakura was the last Philippine eagle hatched at the center. The late Pag-asa, who passed away in January this year, was the first-ever baby Philippine Eagle hatched in 1992 under the captive breeding program.

The new baby eagle was born to rescued eagles Ariela and MVP Matatag who were paired in 2019. Ariela laid the egg on October 10, 2021.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) reported that Chick No. 29 hatched on December 4, at 1:16 p.m., 25 hours and 13 minutes since the egg cracked.

“We are so thrilled to announce the much-awaited hatching of the 29th Philippine eagle chick at the PEC! Congratulations to new eagle parents Ariela and MVP Matatag!” PEF social media posted on December 6th.

“Seems like a long time, but actually it is the fastest pip-to-hatch record in our breeding program. This chick just couldn’t wait to say hello to the world!” added PEF.

Chick No. 29 is being kept in the PEC’s incubation and rearing laboratory under the monitoring of PEF’s Conservation Breeding Program.

The PEF is an organization dedicated to saving the endangered Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) from extinction. The PEF performs direct conservation actions for the Philippine Eagle and implements programs in research, community-based conservation, conservation breeding, and education.

People and organizations can make donations to PEF and adopt animals under its care.

Earlier this year, a rescued Philippine eagle was released by PEF back to the wilderness to mark Earth Day.

In 2020, Philippine Eagle Makilala Hiraya was safely returned to her home forest.
