Filipino healthcare professionals Dennis Singson and Marc Rodriguera have been named the recipients of the first-ever International Community Nurse award from The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) in the United Kingdom.

Singson and Rodriguera were honored by the QNI charity dedicated to improving community nursing care that also annually honors nurses working in the United Kingdom for their service.

The Filipino nurses were declared the joint winners of the charitable institute’s prestigious new award given to internationally-educated nurses working in community settings in England in a virtual awards ceremony on December 13, 2021.

Singson was lauded for his exemplary work in the community as an Advanced Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Station Practice GP Surgery in Hastings. He is also currently the Deputy Chair of the Philippine Nurses Association of the UK.

The nomination citation for Singson’s award reads: “Dennis’ impact on patient care has been profound. The primary care team defer to him for management ideas for complex patients,”

“Serving a deprived population with hectic lifestyles, Dennis’ relaced yet firm communication skills have provided a constant readily available source of information and care to our patients and when appropriate their carers,”

“Always calm and reassuring, he makes thorough assessments of risk and safety and provides patients with dependable safety plans. Leading by example, Dennis is reliable, straightforward and diplomatic.”

Rodriguera, an ELFT Advanced Telehealth Practitioner, was recognized for his outstanding telehealth service for novel coronavirus patients during the pandemic.

“Marc has put a lot of effort around keeping the team together during the pandemic. He was pivotal in mapping the Telehealth service during Covid to accommodate patients needing remote monitoring at home,” said Clinical & Service Lead for Telehealth and Health & Social care Navigators within the EPCT, Raguraman Padmanabhan.

“He was instrumental in providing clinical expertise to patients discharged from hospital, post-Covid. Marc continuously supports junior colleagues not just within the team but from other teams too. Staff have often described him as someone who listens and handles situations with calmness and is very supportive,” Padmanabhan added.

Internationally awarded Filipino nurses include Jose Ariel Lañada of the Oxford University Hospitals, named the United Kingdom’s Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Nurse of the Year, while the Filipino Nurses Association in the United Kingdom (FNA-UK) won the Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Community Initiative of the Year award.
