University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) students have delivered the Philippines’ first win at the global EstĂ©e Lauder Companies (ELC) Hack4A11y Virtual Hackathon for their assistive mobile application for people with disabilities.
Members of Team Icarus composed of UA&P students Jove Calalo, Javier Luis Barreiro, Danielle Marie Peralta, Jose Hector Calilung, and the team’s coach Jamie Emilie Alabin, came in second place in the 2021 edition of the international hackathon for product design, user experience, and technology.
UA&P’s winning innovation, “Ease”, is an assistive mobile application that provides easily accessible support to those with physical impairments. It involves a combination of assistive technologies for sight, hearing, speech, and mobility features.
Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology from India placed first, while a team from the University of Toronto and University of College London students and alumni won third place.
The mobile application stood out from entries submitted by international participants including from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, New York University, among others.
The 2021 Estée Lauder Companies Virtual Hackathon held on October 28, 2021., Hack4A11y is focused on developing accessible and inclusive solutions to help tackle challenges that people with disabilities face on a daily basis.
The Project MERS team from UA&P earlier also made history by becoming the first Philippine team to be declared Grand Champions in the Asian Business Case Competition (ABCC) in Singapore.
UA&P is one of the Philippine universities included in the World Impact Rankings of Times Higher Education.
Three university teams from the Philippines dominated this year’s Haquathon 2.0 (H20), an ASEAN regional hackathon for tech-based solutions to save our seas.
