Filipino social enterprise Liter of Light conducted free workshops on solar light-making to promote sustainable energy at the Dubai Design Week in the United Arab Emirates.

The Philippines-born global grassroots solar lighting movement invited participants to craft low-cost and hand-built recycled solar lamps in free workshops as part of its campaign to end energy poverty around the world.

The solar light-making sessions were led by Liter of Light founder and Edison Awardee Illac Diaz at the Dubai Design District (d3) from November 8 to 13, 2021.

“Thanks to everyone who came out to the Making Space at Dubai Design District yesterday for our final workshop at Dubai Design Week!” Filipino solar energy social enterprise Liter of Light posted on social media.

“We are inspired by your enthusiasm and determination in building solar lights for communities living without electricity! We congratulate our newest solar engineers and are excited for our upcoming projects in Dubai. Stay tuned!”

Every solar lamp built by the volunteers in the workshops will be shipped straight to homes in need of electricity after the Dubai Design Week.

The innovative solar lights have the power to illuminate homes for 12-16 hours a day, for the next five years. Liter of Light’s cost-effective solar lamps can also replace hazardous and traditional forms of lighting relied on by villagers and reduce carbon emissions in the environment by at least 1,000 kg.

The Dubai Design Week is an annual week-long festival celebrating design and creativity in the UAE and beyond through an extensive programme of free-to-attend exhibitions, installations, engaging activities and pop-ups, talks and workshops, accessible for visitors at all levels.

Liter of Light’s solar lighting project recently won the Green Award for Energy during the 2021 Greentech Festival in London.

The solar lamps were used to create giant billboards of Solar Messages of Hope for urgent Climate Action addressed to the COP26 and shown on Twitter.

The solar lamps are made by the award-winning Light it Forward video challenge that calls on the help of celebrities, the youth, and ordinary Filipinos to build solar lamps for donation to electricity-deprived communities.

The Liter of Light’s solar kits are available for purchase on the e-commerce platform of Lazada.
