Filipina photojournalist Hannah Reyes Morales is part of the photo exhibition in Oslo, Norway, that highlights the work of the first Filipino Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Maria Ressa.

Morales, the winner of the prestigious International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards for Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism in 2020, has had her work appear in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and National Geographic Magazine, among others.

Morales joins Russian photographer Nanna Heitmann in this year’s new exhibit honoring Nobel Peace Prize winners, journalists Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia, for their efforts to defend freedom of expression.

Based in Manila, Philippines, Morales has created a documentary photo series for the exhibit depicting how social media permeates everyday life in the country.

“This commission has been one of the most challenging I have ever worked on,” said Morales in a press release dated November 26, 2021.

The Filipina lensman has also taken pictures in Manila where she has documented Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s “violent war on drugs”.

“This work is personal: like many of us at home, watching the consistent assault on truth has been deeply disturbing. I’ve been able to take a closer look at the chaos that is rooted online, and in the dark, I was reminded constantly that on the other side of the screen are people,” adds Morales.

Morales and Heitmann’s photographs will be on display at the exhibit in the Nobel Peace Center the day after the awardees of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Ressa and Muratov receive their Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10.

“We are very happy to have worked with two such talented, young documentary photographers, who are also from the Nobel Peace Prize laureates’ home countries. They are therefore very experienced in working under trying conditions for freedom of the press and expression,” says Nobel Peace Center Director of Exhibitions, Nina Frang Høyum.

The Nobel Peace Prize exhibition which officially opens on December 11, 2021, in Oslo, Norway, will be attended by the Peace Prize laureates. It will be open to the public starting December 12.
