Book Nook, the first-ever all-Pinoy reading and storytelling space of the National Book Development Board (NBDB), is being launched nationwide to give Filipino indigenous children access to reading materials and the internet.
The initiative will serve as a resource center for children and their families as well as educators in far-flung and remote communities where they can borrow books and learn to read critically and write their own stories.
Aside from reading, the space will host storytelling, arts and crafts, reading and writing workshops, and book club meetings.
The reading project will also carry over 1,500 local titles from Filipino authors and publishers to nurture and promote a Pinoy culture of reading to kids and teens.
The Book Nook will officially launch in 52 Philippine indigenous and remote sites, located from Ifugao to Tawi-Tawi, at 9:00 a.m. (PST) on November 24, 2021.
The national launch will feature events such as ritual and community rites, balagtasan, and performances from storytellers Luisito “Bodjie” Pascua, Rosie Sula, Jholaica Barron, Lesley Lina, and Virgilio S. Almario, among others.
You may register for The Book Nook National Launch held online via Zoom through this link.
The Book Nook is the flagship program of the NBDB in bringing in friendly and accessible reading spaces all over the country. It was made possible through the cooperation of local publishers, government units, community partners, volunteers, civil society organizations, cultural workers, artists, and storytellers.
A mobile library is roaming Ilocos Norte to provide free use of distance learning tools and books to Filipino schoolchildren amid the new normal in education.
The Department of Science and Technology–Lanao Del Norte (DOST-LDN) recently handed over six (6) units of STARBOOKS Digital Library to three schools situated in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas or GIDA in the province, while CANVAS Philippines donated children’s e-books to the Globe eLibrary.
