Wesley So leads going into final round of US Chess Championship title defense

Wesley So’s United States Chess Championship title defense is looking good as the Filipino American Grandmaster remains on top of the leaderboard going into the final round of the tournament.

After 10 days of play, the reigning two-time U.S. Chess Champion has kept his spot as the leader in a three-way tie with Sam Sevian and Fabiano Caruana. All three carry a score of 6.0/10 going into the final round.

So will meet Ray Robson in Round 11 scheduled to be played On October 18, 2021.

Overall Standings after Day 10

So reclaimed the US Chess Championship in 2020 after winning it for the first time in 2017 – both victories secured in undefeated runs.

The Cavite-born So got off to a good start when the tourney began on October 5 and has stayed on track in his title defense which wraps up on October 19.

The reigning two-time U.S. Chess Champion is battling to keep his title in 11 rounds of the over-the-board national tournament among 12 of the strongest chess players in America vying for the $194,000 prize money, qualification into the World Championship cycle, and the title of 2021 U.S. Champion.
