A woman living on the streets of Astoria, Oregon passed away last year, unaware that she had an unclaimed inheritance under her name.
Cathy Boone passed away in a shelter, desperate and homeless, unaware that she had £600,000 ($884,407) of unclaimed inheritance. According to reports, a lot of effort was made to trace the 49-year-old and hand over the fortune but they just couldn’t find her.
Mirror reported that Boone, a mother of two, was the sole owner of the money her mother had left behind after she died in 2016. All efforts were made to find her, from newspaper advertisements to private investigators but she could not be traced.
Boone had been suffering from an illegal substance and mental health issues when she passed away while sleeping rough in Astoria, Oregon.
Her father, Jack Spithall, told KGW News that she needed “help in the worst way” at the end of her life. “It just didn’t make any sense to me. That money just sitting there – and she needed help in the worst way,” he said during a TV interview.
Mirror reported that Boone was raised in the Portland area and later moved to Astoria, where her mother lived after her parents had separated. Her $884,407 inheritance money now remains unclaimed in a state bank account after the estate’s representatives couldn’t locate her.
The funds were apparently moved to the Department of State Lands “Given a year and a half of effort taken by the personal representative and the attorney for this particular estate, there really isn’t much more than the state could do,” said Claudia Ciobanu, a spokesperson for the department.
Boone’s two biological children and others could potentially claim her money.
