Meet “Heneral Tuna” the lovable alien cat who is on a mission to steal hearts and conquer the world but instead discovers Filipino culture and values.
The eponymous feline character from outer space is the star of a short animated series initiated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to promote cultural values to a new generation of young audiences.
The new mini-series “Heneral Tuna” explores what it means to be a Filipino through the eyes of a blue alien soldier-cat from Planet Mingming who crashlands in the Philippines and gets adopted by a human family in Barangay Hiraya.
Tasked with world domination, the feline space invader stays in the country to spy on locals for his mission and learns uniquely Pinoy cultural values along the way.
Based on research conducted by the NCCA’s Filipino Values Program, the seven-episode series will each spotlight a core Filipino value that the lead character encounters on his adventures.
Directed by Avid Liongoren, the mini-series is produced by Rocketsheep Studio behind the hit animated films “Hayop Ka!” and “Saving Sally”.
The story concept was developed by talented Filipino writers and artists Rob Cham, Charlene Sawit-Esguerra, and Kevin Raymundo, while Jether Amar contributed to visual development and art direction, with Carlo Vergara of Zsazsa Zaturnnah fame as the scriptwriter.
Manny Angeles, co-producer and writer of “Hayop Ka!”, lends his voice to the titular character.
The animated series consists of seven episodes, each with an average runtime of three minutes.
Viewers can watch “Heneral Tuna” on the FDCP Channel and on Kumu, starting on October 15, 2021, at 7:00 P.M.
Local animators from Davao had previously created a proudly Pinoy cartoon icon named Tarci to represent the Philippines in the entertainment industry.
Filipino anime “Trese,” based on the award-winning Pinoy graphic novel of the same title, premiered on Netflix with an all Filipino voice-cast.
