De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) has made history as the first Philippine university to earn an international Silver STARS Rating for its continued efforts and practices to achieve sustainability on campus.

DLSL was ranked Silver in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), a self-reporting framework for colleges and universities around the world to measure their sustainability performance. It is a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), an organization based in Philadelphia that promotes sustainability in higher education.

The university’s reporting efforts were led by the Sustainability and Inclusive Education Directorate in collaboration with the departments that strongly supported and contributed to the deployment of the school’s Sustainability Roadmap implemented in 2017.

“The journey towards the global sustainability reporting assessment, AASHE STARS, achieving a Silver Rating, fuels us to share our sustainability initiatives and practices to educational institutions for them to embrace the value of academic social innovation, economic justice in our resources, ecological integrity in our operations and good governance in all aspects of administration,” said Remian Santos, head of the Sustainability and Inclusive Education Directorate.

The Lasallian educational institution in the Philippines received the silver rating on its first application in June 2021, affirming its leadership and commitment to reducing environmental impact. It joins the ranks of 153 colleges and universities around the globe that were similarly conferred the silver rating by AASHE.

“As early as 2016, when DLSL hinged its directions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), we recognized that our mission is not apart from the rest of the world, from the rest of humanity, and, from the rest of the planet. We recalibrated our Mission-Vision Statement, with the sustainable development goals at its core,” said De La Salle Lipa President and Chancellor, Br. Dante Jose R. Amisola.

In 2020, De La Salle Lipa was named an Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) International Green Gown Awards (IGGA) Finalist.

The 2021 edition of the Green Gown Awards named De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) in Cavite as top Sustainability Institution of the Year.

With more than 900 participants in 40 countries, AASHE’s STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance.

Participants in the program reported their accomplishments in five specific areas: academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration, innovation, and leadership.
