The Filipino docu-film “Aswang” by Alyx Ayn Arumpac has won the Coup de cœur du Jury award in the 20th edition of the Festival International du Film Insulaire de l’île de Groix (FIFIG) in Groix, France.
Arumpac’s critically-acclaimed debut feature bagged the Jury award in this year’s International Island Film Festival of Groix held from August 18 to 23, 2021.
The Philippines’ winning entry in the festival is an 85-minute documentary that offers an unflinching coverage of the government’s war on drugs in the country while using the myth of the “aswang” (Filipino for shape-shifting evil spirits) throughout the film. “Aswang” was produced by Cinematografica films with the support of producers from France, Norway, Qatar, and Germany.
“Aswang” has won top accolades in international film festivals, including the International Critic’s Prize (Fipresci) in the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA 2019), the Grand Prize in the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), and the prestigious White Goose Award for Best Film during the 12th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival.
Established in 2001, the Festival International du Film Insulaire de l’île de Groix is an annual festival based in Port Lay, France that focuses on films on and from the islands.
