Team Philippines has won three medals in the virtual edition of the 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Japan.

Filipino students bagged two silver medals and one bronze during the annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry pupils held remotely for the second time due to the COVID-19 pandemic from July 25 to August 2, 2021.

The Philippines’ IChO representatives competed among over 300 students from 79 countries in the International Science Olympiad.

The country’s two silver medalists this year are:

  • Nathan Wayne Ariston of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Central Mindanao Campus
  • Ron Angelo Gelacio of PSHS-Main Campus

Ariston and Gelacio both won bronze in last year’s IChO virtually held in Turkey.

Bringing home the bronze medal is Aames Juriel Morales of De La Salle University (DLSU) Integrated School Senior High School (SHS) Manila.

First held in 1968, the IChO is an annual competition for the world’s most talented high school students in the field of chemistry. Nations around the world send a team of four students, who are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical and five-hour written theoretical examination.

Team Philippines bagged four silver medals and two bronze medals in this year’s International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), the oldest and most prestigious of the international scientific Olympiads, in July.

Filipino students bagged three bronze medals in the 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Singapore.
