Here is the schedule of the Filipino para-athletes competing in four different sports at the Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, from August 24 to September 5, 2021.
The Philippine Paralympic team is aiming for the country’s first-ever gold medal in the Paralympic Games, to match the historic campaign of 19 Filipino Olympians at the last Tokyo Olympics.
Since joining the Paralympics in 1988, the Philippines has won two medals: powerlifter Adeline Dumapon earned bronze in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, and paddler Josephine Medina won another bronze in 2016.
Team Philippines was originally bannered by a six-strong national team of top para-athletes in the quadrennial games, including para trackster Jerrold Mangliwan, para discus thrower Jeanette Aceveda, para swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Gary Bejino, para taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin, and para powerlifter Achelle Guion. However, one para-athlete was reported to forego the games after testing positive for the coronavirus disease just before the scheduled departure for Japan. The para-athlete is yet to be named as of this publication.
Jerrold Mangliwan is set to be the flag bearer in the opening ceremony and Ernie Gawilan for the closing of the multi-sporting event in Tokyo.
