The Philippines’ teen champion, Alexandra “Alex” Eala, has won her opening match in her main draw debut at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Cluj-Napoca Winners Open 2021 in Romania.
The 16-year-old world tennis sensation easily won against Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea, 7-5, 6-2, in the Round of 32 match on August 3.
Eala fought off a 0-4 run by the 28-year-old Argentinian and came back to win the first set and afterward quickly disposed of her opponent in the second set to claim victory.
Alex Eala continues her campaign in Romania for the $250k prize money in the Round of 16 against the WTA No. 119-ranked Mayar Sherif of Egypt scheduled for Thursday, August 5.
Eala, the WTA No. 639-ranked player, came to Romania fresh off her twin victories to claim the Girls’ Singles and Girls’ Doubles Championships at the JA Milan, feats that moved up her ranking to International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Junior No. 2.
The Filipina tennis ace entered the top 1000 in the WTA World Ranking earlier this year and has steadily upped her position after her sterling performances.
