Paralympics Results for Team Philippines 27 August 2021: Rio Paralympians wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan qualified for the finals of his first event while para-swimmer Ernie Gawilan started his own campaign for the first gold medal of the country at the Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan,

2016 Rio Paralympian Jerrold Pete Mangliwan displayed excellent track skills in his first event at the Tokyo Paralympics, qualifying for the finals in the 400-meters after finishing 4th in his qualifying heat with a time of 1:03.41.
The 2015 ASEAN Para Games double gold and silver medalist was ranked 7th overall among 10 para-tracksters of two heats, sending him to the finals among the 8 fastest racers.
Mangliwan was however disqualified from the final race after being called for a lane infringement infraction according to World Para Athletics Rule 18.5a.
The 41-year-old para-trackster from Kalinga, Apayao who acquired paraplegia from polio and started wheelchair racing in 2009 continues his journey at the Tokyo Paralympics in two more athletics events:

Jerrold Mangliwan qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics after surpassing the Paralympics standard time of 1:03.27 seconds in the 400-meter T52 wheelchair race during the 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Nottwill, Switzerland.
Mangliwan was the Philippines’ flag bearer in the opening rites of the 2020+1 Tokyo Paralympics on August 24.

Men’s 200m individual medley SM7
Tokyo Paralympics’ first Filipino qualifier para-swimmer Ernie Gawilan started his campaign for the country’s first gold at the Men’s 200-meters individual medley, the same event where he won gold at the Asian Para Games in Indonesia and making him the first Filipino to win in the Asian Para Games. Gawilan went on to win 3 gold medals in 2018.
The Rio Paralympian improved on his 2018 Asian Para Games winning time of 2:52:43, recording a time of 2:50.49 in his heat where he finished in 5th place.
The Filipino champion para-swimmer finished 9th overall out of 13 competitors in two heats, barely missing the finals for the top 8 swimmers.
The 30-year-old from Davao who was born with underdeveloped extremities continues his Tokyo Paralympics journey in two more events:

Ernie Gawilan qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics after bagging the bronze medal in the Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaften (IDM) Berlin Para Swimming World Series in Berlin, Germany. Gawilan will be the Philippines’ flag bearer at the close of the games.
