The Olympics Results for Team Philippines today notched a win for Filipina boxing champion Nesthy Petecio who secured a medal finish by advancing to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, swimmer Remedy Rule wraps up her campaign with a semifinals appearance in her second event.
NESTHY PETECIO (Boxing)
Nesthy Petecio is assured of a podium finish at the Tokyo Olympics after winning her bout against Yeni Marcela Arias Castaneda of Colombia in the Women’s Featherweight quarterfinals match on July 28, 2021.
The Philippines’ champion boxer defeated the Colombian via unanimous decision, 5-0, to book her spot in the semifinals of the 54-57 kg. weight division.
Petecio was given all three rounds, 30-27, by two judges while three judges scored for the Filipino, 29-28.
Nesthy Petecio is poised to give the Filipino nation its second medal – at least a bronze – in the 2020 Summer Games when she fights Italy’s champion, Irma Testa, on Saturday, July 31.
Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz had earlier given the Philippines its first-ever gold medal at the Olympics on July 26.
Petecio earlier surprised No. 1 seed Lin Yu-Ting of Chinese Taipei with a split decision win in their Round of 16 bout to advance to the quarterfinals. Her first win at the Olympics was also via unanimous decision in the Round of 32 preliminaries match vs. Marcelat Sakobi Matshu of Congo held on Day 1 of the Summer Games in Japan.
REMEDY RULE (Swimming)
Remedy Rule wrapped up her Olympic campaign after reaching the semifinals of her second event, the 200-meter Butterfly.
Rule clocked in at 2:12.89 for a Top 15 overall finish in her event.
The 24-year-old women’s national record holder advanced to the semis after clocking in 2:12.23 for 15th place overall in the Women’s 200-meter Butterfly heats on Tuesday.
The Filipino swimmer previously finished in second place in her heat at the Women’s 100-meter Butterfly event with a time of 59.68 but did not make the Top 16 who qualified for the semifinals.
