Ernest John “EJ” Obiena has just broken the Philippines’ pole vault record with his silver-winning performance earlier today at the Irena Szwewinska Memorial/ Bydgosszcz Cup in Poland.

Obiena cleared 5.87 meters to surpass the national outdoor record of 5.85 meters which he set earlier in June in Mossingen, Germany.

Asia’s leading pole vaulter from the Philippines battled against athletes from 5 continents and emerged second in the event’s top 10 dominated by American and European champions.

The 25-year-old Filipino champion finished behind the USA’s Chris Nilsen who cleared 5.92 meters but defeated three-times world medallist Piotr Lisek of Poland and Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil with whom he recently tied for gold after clearing 5.80 meters in Leverkusen, Germany.

Obiena is the first Filipino to qualify as a member of the Philippine delegation to the Tokyo Olympics and will campaign for the first-ever gold medal for the country.

EJ Obiena will next see action at the Wanda Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden on July 4.
