Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena proved that his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics are on the right track after capturing the gold medal in the Taby Stav Gala Street Pole Vault competition held in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 25-year-old Filipino champion has shown that he is in fine form for the Summer Games in Japan after clearing the Olympic standard of 5.80 meters on his first try, defeating 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil and American Andrew Irwin in the men’s pole vault event on July 2, 2021.
EJ Obiena won against his training partner Braz with whom he previously tied for first place after also learning 5.80 meters in the True Athletes Classics meet in Leverkusen, Germany.
The national athlete recently broke the Philippines’ pole vault record by clearing 5.87 meters at the Irena Szwewinska Memorial/ Bydgosszcz Cup in Poland. He surpassed the national outdoor record of 5.85 meters which he set earlier in June in Mossingen, Germany.
Obiena is the Philippines’ first qualifier to the Tokyo Summer Olympics and will be one of the 19 Filipino athletes representing the country in the upcoming quadrennial games beginning this July.
