Thirteen-year-old Filipino cellist Damodar Das Castillo has bagged the top prize in the Musica Goritiensis International Music Competition in Italy.
Castillo won first prize (category C) in the classical music competition at this year’s Gorizia, Italy-based Musica Goritiensis International Music Competition which took place online until June 2, 2021.
Das Castillo’s video submission was judged along with other entries from young students and musicians around the globe.
The Filipino cello prodigy’s winning entry in the competition was a video of him playing Auguste Franchomme’s Caprice No 9 in B Minor, Op.7, the second movement from Francois Francoeur’s Cello Sonata in E Major, and the first movement from Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Opus 85.
The teen cellist, who is currently a student at the Salzburg Mozarteum, played as the youngest member and soloist for the award-winning Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra (MSJO).
Damodar also recently won a silver medal in the 3rd Vienna International Music Competition.
The institutions “Slovenski center za glasbeno vzgojo – Centro sloveno di educazione musicale Emil Komel” and “Kulturni center Lojze Bratuž” hosted the Musica Goritiensis International Music Competition for young musicians up to thirty years of age. The competition aims to encourage more young people to study music.
