The Philippines’ children and youth choir from Mandaue in Cebu has won the gold award and the runner-up Grand Prix prize at the 11th World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna, Austria.
The Mandaue Children and Youth Chorus was announced on June 22, 2021, as the 2nd place winner in the Grand Prix and the recipient of the Gold Award in the Mixed Choir Category in the festival participated by 251 Choirs from 32 countries.
The 30-member choir from Cebu in the Visayas Islands was awarded a prize of 2,000 Euro for its top 3 finish in the annual festival held virtually this year from May 22 to June 12.
Maestro Dennis Gregory A. Sugarol leads the choir which has participated in international music festivals and garnered top prizes and awards in a number of national and international music competitions since 2004.
The choir is a recipient of the Philippine government’s most coveted honorary awards for the performing arts, such as Garbo sa Sugbu, Perlas, and Ani Ng Dangal awards for bringing honor to the country and for promoting Filipino music and arts to the world.
Filipino choral groups which have been recognized in competitions in Europe include the Imusicapella, UP Singing Ambassadors, and the UP Los Banos Choral Ensemble.
