The Philippines’ tennis champion Alexandra “Alex” Eala and Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva have swept their first match at the French Open Girls’ Doubles, moving forward to the next round in a bid for the Grand Slam title.
The 16-year-old Eala and 18-year-old Selekhmeteva bested Evialina Laskevich of Belarus and Alina Shcherbinina of Russia, 6-4, 6-4, on June 7, 2021 (June 8 Philippine Standard Time), at the Roland-Garros court in Paris, France.
The tour’s top-seeded pair started the match tied with their opponents at 4-4 in the first set then went on to win two straight games to take the lead at 6-4. The second set saw the pair start with a 3-0 lead then proceeded to win the match.
Eala (ITF Junior No. 3) and Selekhmeteva (ITF Junior No. 10) had earlier secured a finalist finish at the W25 Platja D’Aro in Spain last May.
Alex Eala and her previous tennis partner Priska Nugrohois of Indonesia are the reigning Australian Open Doubles Champions.
Alex Eala had earlier bowed out of the French Open Girls’ Singles.
The Filipino and Russian partners next take on 16-year-old ITF No. 14 Sofia Costoulas of Belgium and 17-year-old ITF No. 38 Laura Hietaranta of Finland in their Round 2 match later today.
