Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan has officially qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in July after breaking into the top 60 of the Olympic Golf Rankings.
Pagunsan secured a slot to the quadrennial meet scheduled in Japan by placing 49th in the latest world ranking for male golfers.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced on June 22, 2021, that Pagunsan adds to the growing delegation of Filipino national athletes bound to the Tokyo Olympics next month.
“Congratulations golfer Juvic Pagunsan for qualifying to the Tokyo Olympic Games!” the PSC wrote.
The native of Bacolod City recently won his maiden Japan Golf Tour title in the 2021 Mizuno Open after playing for ten years in the league, which further strengthened his bid to compete in the Tokyo Games.
The 43-year-old national athlete will see action at the men’s golf event of the Olympics at the Kasumigaseki Country Club from July 29 to August 1.
First Filipino U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Bianca Pagdanganan are also expected to formally make the Games with Pagunsan.
The Philippines’ champion golfer Juvic Pagunsan is the 13th member of the Philippine national delegation to the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games, joining Filipino shooter Jayson Valdez, boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Irish Magno and Eumir Felix Marcial, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez and weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando.
