Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle is joining the Vatican body that supports Eastern Catholic churches after being appointed by Pope Francis.

The former Archibishop of Manila was named to the Congregation for the Eastern Churches on June 9, 2021, the lone addition to the Vatican body which also assists the Latin-rite Catholic dioceses of the Middle East.

CBCP News reported the Vatican body formerly known as the Congregation for the Oriental Churches collaborates with about 23 Eastern Catholic churches and communities.

Since his move to Rome in 2020 as the new Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Cardinal Tagle has also been appointed to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) which operates like the Vatican’s central bank.

Pope Francis previously promoted Cardinal Tagle to the order of “cardinal bishops”, the highest rank within the College of Cardinals, from where the Dean of College of Cardinals is elected. The dean presides at the conclave in the case of “sede vacante”, a period when there is no pope.
