Filipina fencer Samantha Kyle Catantan has captured the silver medal in the North American Cup (NAC) held in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A.

Catantan, playing for Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), advanced to the Division 1 finals in women’s foil before bowing out to Canadian fencing queen Eleanor Harvey, 5-15, on June 6, 2021.

In the semifinals, Catantan won against Israel’s Nicole Pustilnik, 15-14, before defeating American Sarah Taffel, 15-11.

The June NAC is the penultimate tournament before the Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled in July.

The Philippines’ champion junior fencer from the University of the East (UE) High School earlier missed out on her ticket to the Summer Games even after she won the bronze medal in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 19-year-old national athlete is now preparing for the 2021 Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Hanoi, Vietnam, scheduled later this year.

Sam Catantan marked a memorable debut playing for Penn State during the Ohio State Invitational held in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. and the 2021 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships.
