Edible Landscaping promotes Filipino household food production

Edible Landscaping merges decorative landscaping with sustainable gardening.

The Edible Landscaping (EL) model developed by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is being promoted to help Filipino households produce their own food to address food security in the country.

The UPLB model of “foodscaping” that merges decorative landscaping with sustainable gardening advocates with the belief that “No Filipino should be hungry” through sustainable gardening.

The UPLB partnership with the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) conducted training on edible landscaping titled, “Oh My Gulay (OMG)! Sa FNRI: A Step Towards Biodiversity” last June 2-3, 2021 via Zoom.

More than 50 employees from DOST-FNRI joined the training that focused on the principles and practices of EL and as well as its potential contribution to achieving food and nutrition security among Filipino households.

The two-day training is part of the “Edible Landscaping Technology Promotion and Information Dissemination Campaign Project,” funded by the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research

When the Covid-19 outbreak hit the Philippines in 2020, UPLB released edible landscaping starter kits and proposed its garden model as a source of healthy food during community quarantines and even in the new normal after the lockdowns.
