Philippines’ Junna Tsukii wins 1st world gold in Portugal, boosts Olympic hope

The Philippines’ Junna Tsukii has won her first-ever gold medal in the World Karate Federation (WKF) Premier League held in Lisbon, Portugal, boosting her chances of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Filipino Japanese karateka defeated Kazakhstan’s Moldir Zhangbyrbay, 2-0, in the final round of the female Kumite -50kg division.

On her way to a gold podium finish, the Philippines’ national athlete edged foes Daniela Gallego of Colombia (10-2), Iran’s Sara Bahmanyar (2-1), and Egypt’s Radwa Sayed (1-1) in the preliminaries of the competition.

In the semi-finals, Tsukii bested two-time World champion Alexandra Recchia of France, winning the bout 2-0.

Tsukii shared about her recent victory in an Instagram post on May 2, 2021.

“look at my first gold medal on the world calibre stage. I would like to thank everyone who have supported me to this point ☺ this medal is for YOU,” Junna Tsukii wrote.

The Karate 1 Premier League is the most important league event in the world of karate.

Junna Tsukii is currently at the 10th rank overall in the Kumite -50kg division in the World Karate Federations (WKF) ranking and the fifth-best karateka in her division in Asia.

Tsukii has also won gold medals from the Invitational Championships and the 2021 Golden Belt Tournament, both held in Serbia.
