Filipino restaurant Purple Yam in Brooklyn, New York City, has been included in the 2021 Michelin Bib Gourmands list of affordable, standout establishments.

Purple Yam was named one of the 131 restaurants recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide to serve good food at moderate prices in this year’s edition of the Bib Gourmand awards.

The annual Bib Gourmand awards are bestowed on restaurants selected by Michelin guide inspectors for their affordability, high-quality menu, and “very good value for money.”

Purple Yam, owned by Filipino husband-wife tandem Romy Dorotan and Amy Besa, serves traditional Filipino cuisine in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. They first opened the restaurant in New York, where it became known for its bold flavors and for being one of the first to introduce Americans to Filipino cuisine.

Chefs and owners Besa and Dorotan have also opened a local branch of the popular Purple Yam Modern Filipino Restaurant in Malate, Manila.

The Michelin Guide writes the following about the Purple Yam:

“Arguably one of the most fast-growing and intriguing cuisines on both coasts, this outpost from the team behind “Memories of Philippine Kitchens” flaunts a smart, urbane mix of local families and savvy gourmands,”

“Sharing is key so you can sample a bit of everything, including pajeon, a delicious Korean-style scallion-and-shrimp pancake. Then linger over the universally loved pancit luglug (call ahead to order); or oxtail kare-kare, braised in a sauce of peanut butter, onions, tomatoes and garlic,”

“The dessert carte may just unveil such enticing treats as champorrado, house-made ice creams and sorbets. Infused shochu is a hit at all times.”

The Filipino-owned restaurant also announced its inclusion in this year’s Bib Gourmand awards via Facebook on May 9, 2021.

“Thanks to Michelin Bib Gourmand which has always included us in this list ever since our Cendrillon days in SoHo, Manhattan,” Purple Yam wrote. “Thanks to everyone who reposted this and joyfully tagged us with the good news.”

Filipino restaurants Jeepney and Purple Yam were named in The Daily Meal’s 101 Best in Asia and the 100 Time Out New York (TONY) Best Restaurants.
