The Filipino Nurses Association in the United Kingdom (FNA-UK) has won the Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Community Initiative of the Year award for its outstanding work during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The non-profit organization was named among the winners in this year’s National Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Health & Care Awards in a virtual ceremony in April.

Susie Lagrata, FNA-UK National Secretary, accepted the award on behalf of the group and noted how healthcare professionals like Filipinos who belong to minority groups were “disproportionately affected” by COVID-19.

The Filipino Nurses Association UK is a growing alliance of Pinoy nurses working overseas and was formed in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak to give the community access to networking and support.

“We are truly honoured to receive a prestigious National BAME Health & Care Awardee “Community Initiative of the Year,” the FNA-UK posted on Facebook on April 23, 2021.

“Teamwork allows us to reach the heights of excellence and perform the extraordinary. Congratulations to our Founding officer Francis Fernando, Mr. President Ariel Lanada and the rest of the Interim Officers,” the organization added.

Among the founding members of the group is Ariel Lañada who serves as the Divisional Educational Lead for the Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Specialist Surgery, Children’s and Neonates (NOTSSCaN) Division of the National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust.

Ariel Lañada was earlier named BAME Nurse of the Year for his outstanding work and being “instrumental in supporting his colleagues and the Filipino community” in Oxfordshire during the global health crisis.

The National BAME Health & Care Awards recognize and celebrate the achievements of BAME staff and support networks from across the health and care fields in making significant improvements in career development.

Filipino nurses Charito Romano and Minnie Klepacz both received British Empire Medals for their outstanding work amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.
