The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Pasay City has started lighting up its facade with the colors of the country’s flag to mark the celebrations of the National Flag Day and Philippine Independence Day.

The lighting display that showcases hues from the Philippine’ national flag began on May 28, 2021, to commemorate the very first time the flag was unfurled in the year 1898 when the Filipino revolutionary army defeated the Spanish armada in the Battle of Alapan in Imus Cavite. This victory led to the declaration of Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898, in Kawit, also in Cavite.

The period from May 28 to June 12 of each year has been officially declared as Flag Days, according to R.A. 8491 (Section 26).

The CCP’s facade lighting that honors the Filipinos heroes was made possible through the collaborative effort of Danilo Villanueva and Luis Alcoran, with Gobo makers Mark Macapulay and Shantie De Roca, as well as with theater crew members Allan Jay Fami, Donato Alforja, Jomar Lauta, Junelyn Maureal, Kevin Orag, Lucio Tapiru, Norman Aguirre, Richard Galvero, and Timothy John Calma.

The lighting display runs from 7 PM to 10 PM daily (except Mondays) until June 13, 2021.

The CCP facade has been lit up several times to mark various occasions such as the CCP’s 50th founding anniversary, Christmas, and festivals.
