Filipino sprinter Kristina Knott has won a bronze medal at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Alumni Gold Meet while clocking in close to the Tokyo Olympics qualifying times.
The Philippines’ Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) gold medalist strengthened her campaign for a spot in the upcoming Tokyo Summer Olympics by delivering stellar runs in the 100 and 200 meters events in Baton Rogue held on April 23-24, 2021.
The Filipino-American athlete clocked in 23.17 seconds for the bronze in the 200-meter event finals, slightly under the 22.80 Olympics qualifying time.
The Asian Games and Asian Athletics Filipino champion had previously recorded a time of 23.01 seconds in the 200-meter dash at the 2019 SEA Games, breaking the national record of 23.35 seconds held by Asia’s sprint queen Lydia de Vega for 33 years.
The 25-year-old sprint star clocked in 11.28 seconds for a 5th-place finish in the 100-meter dash, closing in on the Olympics qualifying time of 11.15 seconds.
Her Louisiana record in the century dash matches another 33-year-old SEA Games record by the Philippines’ Lydia de Vega, the same record Knott herself broke in the Drake Blue Oval Showcase in Iowa in 2020 by registering a time of 11.27 seconds.
In early April, Kristina Knott boosted her Olympics bid with a silver finish in the century dash event at the Pure Athletics Spring Invitational in Clermont, Florida, with a time of 11.36 seconds.
In March, the Filipino sprinter also won a silver medal in the 100-meter event of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, where Knott clocked in at 11.54 seconds.
Knott will again vie for an Olympics berth at the 10th Savona International Meeting in Savona, Italy, on May 17.
Kristina Knott is campaigning to join the Philippines’ delegation to the Tokyo Summer Olympics that now includes weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, and boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Carlo Paalam, and Nesthy Petecio. The Philippine delegation is on a mission to win the country’s first-ever gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
