Disney has just revealed that its first Filipino language Original Soundtrack (OST) for “Raya and the Last Dragon” will be sung by KZ Tandingan.

Walt Disney Studios made its official announcement through social media on March 2, 2021, introducing the 28-year-old recording artist from Davao del Sur as part of the upcoming animated movie.

After teasing on Monday about the first Filipino-language song from Disney being “sung by one of the Philippines’ most powerful voices”, the studio revealed the Filipino singer had been chosen to sing the song “Gabay” for the newest Disney movie about an Asian tale.

“Asia’s Soul Supreme KZ Tandingan will be lending her remarkable voice to an all-new song titled ‘Gabay’ from Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon,” the American film and entertainment studio said on its Facebook post. “This first-ever Filipino-language track from Disney will be coming your way very soon. Abangan! #DisneyRayaPH”

In her Facebook post, the world-renowned Filipino singer expressed how thankful she is for being chosen to sing the Disney movie song in the Filipino language.

“I am so grateful to be chosen to sing the first-ever Disney track in Filipino!” Tandingan wrote. “Tune in on March 5 as ‘Gabay’ from Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon drops on Spotify. Abangan po ninyo! #DisneyRayaPH @disneyphilippines”

The first Filipino soundtrack for a Disney movie, described as “about trust, strength and unity”, will be released on March 5 alongside the animated film.

“I love that the song reminds us that sometimes we feel we are weak, especially when we are alone, but if we just learn to trust each other, to come together, and to unite, only then are we able to change the world,” KZ told media.

The NCCA Music Ambassador also said she is proud to showcase the beauty of the Filipino language to different parts of the globe through the song of this momentous project.

“I’m very grateful and I feel very proud to be singing in my language, and show off its beauty to the rest of the world. I am proud to be part of history,” she declared.

“I grew up watching Disney movies. Finally, there is a Disney Princess who I can feel a very strong connection to, and that is Raya as the first one inspired by Southeast Asia,” the Pinay singer concluded.

Disney Philippines Studio Marketing Head Allie Benedicto said in a statement that the song “Gabay” demonstrates their commitment to work with local creative talents in telling stories in a locally relevant manner.

It could be recalled that Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon created an online buzz after its trailer was released as it showed elements that are taken from Filipino and Southeast Asian culture.
