University of the Philippines Cebu student Christian Andrei Nuez Laplap has won the United Kingdom’s International Hammond House Literary Prize for his short story, “The Oddity that is Them”.
Laplap was named one of the winners of the Editor’s Choice category in the 2020 edition of the annual writing competition sponsored by the University Centre Grimsby and is scheduled to be awarded in an online awards ceremony to be held on February 27, 2021.
The prize-winning short story will be featured in Hammond House’s Annual Literary Festival traditionally held in February but rescheduled later this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
“The Oddity that is Them” will also be published in an anthology of short stories.
Hammond House is a non-profit members’ organization and publishing company that provides new writers with the help and support they need to establish a successful career.
Winners of the global writing tilt receive a cash prize, and worldwide publication of their work in an anthology of short stories, together with twenty-four shortlisted entries.
Last year’s theme, “Survival” drew over 27 different entries from around the world.
Filipino immigrant Carla Montemayor earlier won a London Writers Award (LWA) while Filipino-American author Erin Entrada Kelly’s historical fiction “We Dream of Space” was awarded the John Newbery Honor for distinguished children’s books.
