Philippines hosts 46th International Bamboo Organ Festival Online Edition

The Philippines’ celebrated Bamboo Organ is housed at the St. Joseph Parish Church in Las Piñas City.

The Philippines is set to host the 46th International Bamboo Organ Festival to be conducted this time in an Online Edition due to the restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 3-day virtual concert is scheduled for March 5-7, 2021, every evening at 8 p.m. Philippine Time at https://ift.tt/3b8MCUQ and on YouTube – International bamboo Organ Festival (Official).

The Bamboo Music Festival has been celebrated since the 1975 restoration of the Bamboo Organ housed at St. Joseph Parish Church in Las Piñas City. This 2021, no tickets will be sold, and the sponsored program can be seen by anyone online.

The annual bamboo organ concert features the festival’s Artistic Director Prof. Armando Salarza (Philippines) together with the Organist – Titular of the monumental Le Picard organ in the Basilica of Tongeren, Luc Ponet (Belgium), regular festival guest, Guy Bovet (Switzerland), and Director of Music at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, and Jennifer Pascual (USA).

Also performing is the festival’s resident guest choir, the Villancico Vocal Ensemble, a group of choral music enthusiasts founded in 2009 by the Junior Music Educators Guild of UP Diliman College of Music.

Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, President of the Philippine Choral Directors Association and a full-time faculty member of the University of the Philippines College of Music, is the conductor.

Viewers of the online program will have a unique view on the keyboard of the Bamboo Organ played by organist Salarza who will also introduce the pipe organ of the San Scholastica College of Music and the organ at San Ezekiel Moreno Oratory.

Filipino bamboo musical instruments have been given new life by the UP-PNU-DOST collaboration.

Betis Pampanga church launched the Philippines’ 2nd Bamboo Organ for Simbang Gabi in 2019.
