The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines has launched the country’s first multi-industry innovation hub to assist Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in developing new products.
The Modular Multi-Industry Innovation Center (MMIC) brings the Philippines to the ranks of Canada, Malaysia, and Mexico who have set up their own Innovation Hubs for advanced scale-up of researches on food and nutraceutical products.
The Philippines’ MMIC was inaugurated on February 18, 2021, led by the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) in Bicutan, Taguig City.
Nicknamed the “InnoHub sa Pinas”, the innovation center is part of the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI)’s technology offerings to Filipino MSMEs venturing into food, dietary supplements, or personal care items made from by-products like seeds, leaves, and pulp.
DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña reports that the facilities, complete with handling support equipment, can be used by the local industry sectors as a venue for developing new products, product equivalents, product variances, and product reintroductions, as well as, pilot capacity production.
“The aim is to give back to Filipinos the experience and way of work and life that is made more functional, efficient, and cost-effective because of science,” the DOST chief said.
“My heart is beaming with pride and happiness to see the fruition of DOST-ITDI’s efforts. We hope that our local industries will take this opportunity to join us in forming a common understanding about technology development using MMIC as the structure and way of working in place,” Secretary De la Peña said.
The DOST has been at the forefront of assisting Filipino businesses with technological innovations in food technology and marketing the products through OneStore Ph.
