The University of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology-developed RxBox vital signs monitoring devices are being deployed to more areas with Covid patients.
DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña announced in his latest report on January 15, 2021, that a new batch of 244 RxBox units for telemetry monitoring have been inspected with 120 having already passed the test.
A total of 368 biomedical monitoring devices were previously delivered to regions NCR, VII, IV-A, III, XI, VIII, and the UP-Philippine General Hospital where the RxBox had its pilot run of monitoring Covid-19 patients. Following the successful tests at UP-PGH, the RxBox units were also rolled out to selected Rural Health Units (RHU) across Northern Mindanao.
The RxBox was developed by a team of researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila and Diliman campuses with support from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).
The RxBox is a portable bedside vital signs monitoring device that can help the hospital in providing more beds with continuous vital signs monitoring and proper care for critically ill COVID-19 patients. The more efficient monitoring allows the management of limited beds in the ICUs.
The biomedical device captures medical signals through built-in sensors, stores data in an electronic medical record (EMR), and transmits health information via the internet.
The RxBox is deemed an essential tool to help in bedside monitoring of the vital signs, oxygen saturation, and electrocardiogram readings of patients diagnosed with COVID-19, especially those whose cases are severe and very ill and need continuous monitoring.
The RxBox also lowers the risk for frontline health workers as it reduces physical contact between patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
