Alex Eala bests No. 1 seeded Aussie, takes 1st-ever quarterfinals spot in ITF tourney

The Philippines’ tennis champion Alex Eala has bested the No. 1 seeded Australian at the W15 Manacor and is taking her first-ever quarterfinals spot in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament.

The 15-year-old junior tennis sensation won against the 21-year-old Seone Mendez, 6-4, 6-1, in her Round 2 match at the Women’s World Tennis Tour held on January 21, 2021, at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar court in Spain.

Eala, the current Australian Open Juniors Doubles Champion, earlier won against an Italian ace in the opening round of the Manacor tourney.

The Rafa Nadal Academy social media posted about its Filipino scholar’s achievement.

Alex Eala will meet Manacor tournament’s No. 5 seed and ITF Singles World No. 14 Carole Monnet of France in the quarterfinals scheduled on January 22.

Alex Eala entered the ITF Manacor tournament as a Main Draw Junior Reserved player by virtue of her being in the ITF Top 100 Junior Ranking.

The W15 Manacor tournament has a prize pot of $15,000 and will run until January 24.

Eala achieved historic feats while representing the Philippines in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, winning the Australian Open Juniors Doubles Championship Grand Slam title with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho, and reaching the semifinals of the French Open Girls Singles, a performance that propelled her to her career-best ITF World Junior No. 2 rank.
