University of the Philippines (UP) researchers Maria Pilar Lorenzo and Dr. Raphael Pangalangan are among the winners of the first annual A. Noam Chomsky Global Connections Awards for transnational research.

The two Filipinos were among the seven researchers awarded virtually on December 9, 2020, by the Society of Transnational Academic Researchers (STAR) Scholars Network for their researches that demonstrate the “very best of scholarly collaboration among scholars around the world”.

The UP alumni made it to the Rising Star Emerging Scholar category given to those who have shown a promising commitment to promoting collaborative research between two or more nations through publications and leadership.

Lorenzo and Pangalangan are the only Filipinos who made it to the prestigious research award list along with other scholars from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Lorenzo is a recipient of cumulatively 70 grants, scholarships, honors, and awards including the recognition by YSEALI Women’s Leadership Academy Alumni Network as one of the 2020 cohort of women leaders in Southeast Asia.

STAR Scholars Network Journalist Janita Poe, cited Lorenzo’s educational and leadership achievements that read:

“Maria Pilar Lorenzo joined Ghent University’s Centre for Higher Education Governance Ghent as a PhD candidate in November 2020. She recently obtained an MSc degree in International Politics in KU Leuven, Belgium as magna cum laude…”

“As a researcher, she is fascinated with examining issues relating to higher education regionalization processes and policies, governance, and social (in)equities. Her most recent study investigates the cross-border research of a Philippine higher education institution within the ambit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.”

In a Facebook post on December 9, Lorenzo gave thanks for the recognition.

“It is with utmost humility and deepest honor I consider to be bestowed the A. Noam Chomsky Global Connections Award. This award truly inspires me to continue on with my research, hoping that it could lead to a more just and humane world in little and ample ways.”

Pangalangan is recognized for his outstanding scholarly work and legal practice. He is currently a Professorial Lecturer at the University of the Philippines College of Law after finishing his post-graduate studies at the University of Cambridge.

To add to his sterling academic accomplishments, Poe wrote:

“While earning his LL.M. with the University of Cambridge, Raphael served as a Project Researcher for the Cambridge Pro Bono Project where he assisted on a Consultative Opinion filed before the IACtHR. He has written extensively on Transnational and International Law with the Brill | Nijhoff, the Oxford University Press, and the Cambridge University Press…”

“His article, Dominic Ongwen and the Rotten Social Background Defense was cited by the Philippine Commission on Human Rights and was awarded the Human Rights Essay Award by the American University Washington College of Law. He is also the recipient of the Oxford-Morris Prize in Human Rights, the Hague Academy of International Law Scholarship, and the Korean International Association Grant for Comparative Law.”

Another UP alumnus, Albert Rosana, had won Canada’s Killam Memorial Grand Prize.

While UP continues to prove its academic level of excellence as it went to the Top 100 in the QS Asian Rankings.
