The Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) honored brave Filipino frontline heroes who shared their inspiring stories through the “K-Healing: Overcome Together” campaign.

South Korea’s cultural arm in the Philippines partnered with Smart telecommunications to recognize the efforts of the country’s essential workers who were nominated by fellow Filipinos to receive “K-Healing care packages” as tokens of gratitude for their courage and sacrifices during these difficult times.

The selected winners with the “most touching stories” were showcased in an online mini benefit concert with special performances from South Korean artists Singer 2, Forestella, and Lim Kim streamed live on KCC’s official YouTube Channel on December 12, 2020.

South Korean actor, Jung Kyung-ho, who starred as Kim June-wan in the hit K-drama ‘Hospital Playlist’ series depicting five doctors and long-time friends of 20 years who share the same passion for music, also joined the tribute and gave encouragement to Filipinos.

“I heard that the medical staff and other people in the Philippines are also suffering a lot due to the pandemic. Although this is just a short message, I sincerely hope that this will give you strength and comfort.

“We are going through a hard time together. I and the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines will cheer for your bright future! Kaya natin ito!” the Korean actor said in the KCC video tribute.

“We are forever indebted to our courageous frontliners. Thanks to their dedication and generous sacrifice, many of us are safe. Celebrate and give due appreciation to these brave heroes by nominating and giving them a chance to receive an exclusive K-Healing Package from KCC,” KCC announced when it launched the campaign in October.

According to the KCC, the campaign received 156 nominations for over 900 frontliners residing in the Philippines. Many of the nominees were everyday heroes of the COVID-19 global pandemic from healthcare workers to janitors, security guards, and firefighters, among others.

Among the winners chosen were nurses Beverly Mae Manansala and Mae Joy Cruspero, who both dedicated themselves to working in the frontlines of the coronavirus disease. Marikina Fire Chief Roger Py meanwhile exemplified volunteerism by going above and beyond the call of duty to keep Filipino communities safe.

Evelyn Setias, a teacher of West Fairview Elementary School, takes care of her three children all by herself while she devotes time to teaching her students in the new normal of schooling. Displaced driver Romeo Subio was nominated by his daughter to cheer him up and thank him for doing his best to gain an alternative means of earning income in tough times.
