The residents of the municipality of Cantilan in Surigao del Sur province in Eastern Mindanao will be planting 1.3 million trees by the year 2021.

The massive tree planting handled by the Project Management Office (PMO) of Cantilan will employ 1,500 residents from six barangays through the “cash for work” program of Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).

Under the “cash for work” program, the residents will each receive Php 2,400 for six-hour work per day for 10 days. The PMO will continue the implementation of the project after 10 days.

The project aims to plant native trees such as narra, falcata, and other fruit trees in different parts of Cantilan, bamboos along the river systems, and mangroves in four coastal barangays.

Cantilan Mayor Carla Lopez-Pichay led the ceremonial planting during the launching of the greening program on November 9, 2020.

Iloilo City also launched June this year its Bamboo Planting Program which aims to propagate 500 bamboo trees to boost the air quality in the city.

The Iloilo Provincial Government, on the other hand, has its Tanum Iloilo which targeting to grow 1.5 million native and fruit-bearing trees to fight climate change.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Foundation join efforts in mangrove rehabilitation along Manila Bay.
